Apple may be preparing to turn the iPhone 18 Pro into a more serious creative camera—not simply through another sensor upgrade, but by giving photographers greater control over how an image is exposed and focused.
A new examination of iOS 27 beta code, reported by MacRumors, points to five camera tools that could accompany Apple’s next Pro phones or arrive through a later software update. None is currently available to beta users, and Apple has not confirmed that any will ship.
Five Leaked iPhone 18 Pro Camera Features
1. Exposure Scopes
The code reportedly references both a histogram and waveform monitor. A histogram maps the distribution of shadows, midtones and highlights, helping a photographer recognize whether an image is being crushed into darkness or clipped into white. A waveform provides similar information while preserving its position across the frame.
These are familiar tools in professional photo and video workflows. Bringing them into Apple’s native Camera app would let creators judge exposure with data instead of trusting the display alone—especially useful in bright sunlight, night scenes or high-contrast interiors.
2. Focus Peaking and Highlight Warnings
Focus peaking reportedly adds a colored outline around edges that are sharply focused. It is particularly useful when autofocus chooses the wrong subject or when a creator wants a precise focus transition.
A separate overlay could warn when highlights are overexposed. The discovered options reportedly include solid or pulsing colors, stripes and checkerboard patterns. For creators shooting white clothing, reflective cars, jewelry, hotel interiors or bright skies, that warning could help preserve detail before the photo is taken.
3. Repeated Self-Timer Photos
Apple also appears to be testing a self-timer that captures multiple photographs in sequence rather than taking a single image. After each exposure, the timer would restart immediately.
It sounds simple, but it could be one of the most broadly useful additions. Group photos often fail because someone blinks. Solo travelers and content creators frequently need several frames to find the right pose. A repeating timer could reduce retakes without forcing the photographer to run back to the phone after every shot.
4. Manual Focus
The most significant creative control may be manual focus. According to the code findings, Apple has tested a control that lets users set and lock focus instead of relying exclusively on autofocus.
Apple already offers manual focus inside Final Cut Camera, its production-oriented video app. A similar tool in the standard Camera app would narrow the gap between the simplicity of an iPhone and the control of a dedicated camera. It could be especially valuable for close-ups, product photography, portraits through foreground objects and scenes in which the camera keeps hunting between subjects.
MacRumors notes that a focus slider appeared in iOS 26 before being removed from the first iOS 27 beta. The underlying code reportedly remains but is restricted to devices shipping with iOS 27 or later. That restriction is one reason the feature is being connected to upcoming hardware, although it does not prove final availability.
5. Variable-Aperture Image Correction
The most intriguing clue concerns aperture-based image correction. The code can reportedly adjust lens corrections according to the aperture setting, blending among as many as four reference points.
That matters because the iPhone 18 Pro has been rumored to introduce a variable aperture on its main camera. A wider aperture can admit more light and create shallower depth of field, while a narrower opening can keep more of a scene in focus. Most current phone cameras use a fixed physical aperture and simulate much of this aesthetic computationally.
If Apple combines a moving aperture with software calibrated for several physical positions, the iPhone could gain more genuine optical flexibility. Portraits, low-light scenes and landscapes would each benefit differently. It would not replace interchangeable lenses, but it could make the phone behave more like a dedicated camera.
Why These Features Matter More Than More Megapixels
The leak suggests Apple may be focusing on how creators make decisions, not only on the size of the final image. Exposure scopes, peaking, manual focus and aperture controls are valuable because they intervene before capture. They give the person holding the phone more authorship.
That would also mark a change in Apple’s camera philosophy. The iPhone became dominant by hiding complexity behind computational photography. These tools would preserve that automatic experience while offering a deeper layer to users who want it.
What Apple Has—and Has Not—Confirmed
Apple’s September 9 announcement confirmed the 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, along with Pro controls for aperture, shutter speed, white balance and a histogram. Those confirmations validate the central direction identified in the beta code: Apple is giving photographers more control before capture.
Not every leaked function was detailed in Apple’s announcement. Focus peaking, repeated self-timer shooting and some highlight-warning options may still depend on software availability, region or later updates. The distinction matters, and this article retains the original leak context while separating confirmed features from the remaining code findings.

If even most of these features arrive, the bigger story will not be that the iPhone 18 Pro takes better pictures automatically. It will be that Apple is preparing to let photographers take more control.
