Rolex has revived one of the most intriguing calendar watches in its history—and chosen Milan, rather than Geneva, to introduce it. The new Perpetual Padellone takes its name and visual inspiration from Reference 8171, the late-1940s watch that Italian collectors nicknamed Padellone, or “large frying pan,” for its broad, unusually flat case.
The nickname may be playful, but the watch is anything but casual. At 39mm, the new Padellone combines a day, date, month and moonphase with the visual restraint of a formal dress watch. It joins the Perpetual 1908 as the second model in Rolex’s modern Perpetual family, signalling that the company is building a serious alternative to the professional steel watches that dominate its popular image.
A Collector’s Nickname Becomes Official
The original Reference 8171 was produced around the turn of the 1950s and has long occupied a special place among serious vintage Rolex collectors. Its calendar layout was unusually sophisticated for the period: day and month windows sat at 12 o’clock, a central hand indicated the date around the dial’s edge and a moonphase display balanced the composition at six.
Unlike the instantly recognizable Submariner or Daytona, the 8171 remained an insider’s Rolex. Its scarcity, complication and elegant proportions separated it from the company’s better-known tool-watch lineage. Italian collectors supplied the affectionate nickname, and Rolex has now elevated that informal language into an official model name.
The choice says something about the company’s relationship with its own history. Rather than reproducing the old watch line for line, Rolex has treated the archive as a starting point. The proportions, dial architecture and celestial personality remain familiar, but the engineering underneath belongs entirely to the present.
The Calendar Changes in an Instant
At the centre of the new watch is calibre 7190, an evolution of the movement architecture introduced for the Perpetual 1908. The Padellone’s annual calendar distinguishes between 30- and 31-day months, requiring manual correction only once each year at the end of February.
The most theatrical element occurs at midnight. Day, date and month indications change simultaneously in a fraction of a second rather than advancing in a slow sequence. Rolex calls the added mechanism the Haplos system. For collectors, the technical achievement is not simply that the calendar understands the month; it is that several displays can release their stored energy together while maintaining the reliability expected from a Rolex.
The date is read through a slim central hand tipped by a crescent moon, moving along a peripheral scale. The arrangement keeps the centre of the dial relatively open and gives the calendar information a precise visual hierarchy.
Meteorite Moons and Restrained Drama
The moonphase is where the Padellone allows itself a little poetry. A blue enamel disc carries representations of the full and new moons made from meteorite. One is treated with dark blue PVD, and both display human faces—a whimsical reference to the expression found on surviving examples of Reference 8171.
That small detail changes the tone of the watch. Rolex is often described through precision, robustness and controlled evolution. The face on the moon introduces something more emotional and almost surreal, but it remains contained within an otherwise disciplined dial.
The case follows the same balance. Its 39mm diameter is contemporary without losing the broad elegance that inspired the nickname. A bezel with a domed upper section and fluted lower edge adds depth, while the grained dial surface softens the formality of the calendar indications.
Three Versions, Two Personalities
Rolex is introducing the Padellone in three configurations. Two use 18-carat Everose gold: one paired with a brown alligator-leather strap and another fitted with the seven-link Settamo bracelet. The third combines a platinum case, blue dial and matte black alligator strap.
The bracelet version will likely attract the most immediate attention. Its multiple polished links give the Padellone a stronger jewellery presence and connect the watch to the refined Italian sensibility behind both its nickname and its Milan debut. On leather, the design reads as a quieter formal complication.

Why Milan Matters
Rolex’s decision to reveal the watch at Palazzo Serbelloni in Milan is as deliberate as the design. The Padellone nickname was created by Italian collectors, and Italy has played an outsized role in shaping the language, taste and scholarship surrounding vintage watches.
Milan is also becoming more important to contemporary watch culture. Luxury houses increasingly use the city to connect high watchmaking with fashion, design and a sophisticated international collector base. By launching outside the conventional spring watch calendar, Rolex gives the Padellone room to stand apart.
The watch represents a broader shift within the crown’s portfolio. The Perpetual collection is creating space for complicated, precious-metal watches that are less concerned with professional utility and more interested in elegance, history and mechanical theatre. It is Rolex speaking to collectors who admire the brand but do not necessarily want another sports model.
That makes the Padellone one of Rolex’s most revealing releases of 2026. It respects a rare reference without becoming a museum copy, introduces a meaningful complication and shows that the company can be playful without sacrificing control. The frying-pan nickname may draw the first smile. The movement, meteorite moon and beautifully resolved proportions are what will keep collectors looking.
